Corwyn stared out the window of his office and sighed.

“What have you decided?” Stephen asked, keeping a neutral voice.

“I have to do it,” he answered.

“Are you insane?” Colin demanded. “You can't give her autonomy. You'll lose all control over what she does."

“We've argued this for four days, Colin. I won't make her wait for an answer any longer. I won't lose all control. I will still be her house lord until she marries—if she marries. If Jayde were freed and raised with us, I'd agree with you about the outcome of this. She wasn't. This is the right thing to do."

“If she marries? If! She has to. Dammit, Corwyn. She has to marry and produce children now.

Otherwise, what's the point of this? Besides, she's stone chosen to—"

“Yes, she is,” Corwyn cut him off cleanly. “Stone chosen makes Jayde the better of you and every house lord who condemned this move. Face it. We all inherited what we are, Colin. Even the mark of Syth is little more than a rubber stamp to announce who will hold the stone next. Who we are was a cosmic accident of birth for all of us, except for Jayde. She is truly chosen. Anna was chosen to bear her for me, and Jayde was touched by the stone. I'm not sure that I have the right to deny her anything within reason.

“The point is, Jayde should have been freed. Knowing now that it was impossible to free her, she should have been raised with us, and I screwed that up—me and all those idiots in charge of the houses and the stone. I know what it's like to lose everything, Colin. Jayde had a good life and she had it ripped away, because when she was a baby, I screwed up. I owe her this one."

“The life she lost was a lie. She needs to accept reality now,” Colin argued.

“Why do you think her reality has to be a harsh one? What is wrong with letting her find whatever happiness she can?"

“I'm not saying she can't choose. We can't force her, after all, but we can encourage her. We can introduce Jayde to our men. Someone has to be her type."

“You're talking about seventy men. Eighteen of those are far too old for her. Most of those are or have been married. Another twelve are in her age range but already mated. Four are still teens."

“That still leaves about thirty-five men. I don't see the problem here."

Corwyn growled in frustration. “You should have had a daughter,” he cursed. “Where does it end, Colin? What if we introduce her to all of our young men, and Jayde refuses every one? Here's a thought!

What if she's refusing them because she feels pressured? What if the men feel the urge to push themselves on her in hopes of catching her eye and push her even further away? Do you want that? Do you want Jayde to choose never to mate? She may. If she does, there is nothing I can do about it, autonomy or no.
